Instructions
- 1Cut ½ inch from one of the long sides of the watermelon to create a stable base for the melon.
- 2Set the watermelon on the cut surface on a platter, and draw a line 2/3 of the way up the side of the watermelon all the way around the melon for the top opening of the basket.
- 3Draw a 2-inch wide handle across the top width of the watermelon.
- 4Cut along the lines of the handle, stopping where they meet the basket opening line.
- 5Slice along the basket opening line, leaving only the part where the handle joins the basket intact. Remove the cut portions of watermelon and scoop, leaving behind a basket and handle shape.
- 6Scoop out the watermelon flesh with a melon baller until the white rind remains.
- 7Turn the melon upside down over a sink to drain out any of the watermelon juice.
- 8Fill the watermelon centerpiece with the balls of watermelon flesh or with fruit salad of your choice. Keep chilled until ready to serve, up to one hour.
