How to Carve a Watermelon Centerpiece

Instructions

    • 1
Cut ½ inch from one of the long sides of the watermelon to create a stable base for the melon.
    • 2
Set the watermelon on the cut surface on a platter, and draw a line 2/3 of the way up the side of the watermelon all the way around the melon for the top opening of the basket.
    • 3
Draw a 2-inch wide handle across the top width of the watermelon.
    • 4
Cut along the lines of the handle, stopping where they meet the basket opening line.
    • 5
Slice along the basket opening line, leaving only the part where the handle joins the basket intact. Remove the cut portions of watermelon and scoop, leaving behind a basket and handle shape.
    • 6
Scoop out the watermelon flesh with a melon baller until the white rind remains.
    • 7
Turn the melon upside down over a sink to drain out any of the watermelon juice.
    • 8
Fill the watermelon centerpiece with the balls of watermelon flesh or with fruit salad of your choice. Keep chilled until ready to serve, up to one hour.
